Bulgarian Contemporary Author Georgi Gospodinov Wins Prozart Award


The contemporary Bulgarian author whose works have been translated to the highest number of foreign languages, Georgi Gospodinov, is the winner of the 2016 Prozart Award, presented by the International Literary Festival PRO-ZA Balkan. The festival is organized by Ikona publishing house and will take place on May 29-31 in Skopje. On May 31, Gospodinov is to accept the award that will be bestowed to him at the Daut Pasin Hammam in Skopje, for his contribution to the development of literature in the Balkans. Georgi Gospodinov is a poet, writer and playwright, one of the most translated Bulgarian authors after 1989. He has four poetry books awarded with national literary prizes. First of them, Lapidarium (1992), won the National Debut Prize. Volumes of his selected poetry came out in German, Portuguese, Czech, Macedonian."Since his student days, with his particular narrative voice, authentic style of narration and unusually wacky humor, he has imposed himself as an exceptional name in the new Bulgarian literature. Besides the numerous literary recognitions, he has managed to attract a large number of devoted readers in Europe and the Untied States, including a great number of admirers in Macedonia," said Aleksandar Prokopiev, the artistic director of the PRO-ZA Balkan Festival. The last Gospodinov's novel on Macedonian language is the 'Physics of Sorrow', translated by Dusko Krstevski, and published by 'Ili-Ili'.
